Measuring Guide - Drapery

Accurate measuring of a window for drapery is critical for the finished product to look its best.  You can download a convenient measuring form to keep track of all important measurements needed Here.

Decide on the width of your drapery rod: (A)

 A = B + C + D

We recommend you add 6” – 12” past the window frame on both sides. This extra width gives the illusion of wider windows and helps leave some additional room for the panels to rest beside the window frame when pushed open and when pulled closed will help reduce light leakage down the sides.

*If you are ordering panels that close completely use this total.

E.g.: If your window width from outside frame to outside frame is 50” and you want your panels to cover 10” past the window on each side, order a 70” pair of panels plus any overlap or return required.

*If you only want side panels to frame the window- add the width of the frame to B and multiply by 2.

e.g.: If you want a 25” side panel on each side, order a 50” pair of panels plus any additional returns you may require.

Determine the height of your drapery rod: (E)

Conventional Rod With Rings

  • For a floor-length drapery, measure from the bottom of the ring to the floor. If you do not want your panels to touch the floor deduct 1/4” – 1” from the length for clearance.
  • For a sill-length drapery, measure from the bottom of the ring to the sill and add 4” (if desired) for light blockage.

Channel Rod

  • With a channel rod the drapery does not hide the track but rather slides along the bottom of it using plastic carriers.
  • For a floor-length drapery, measure from the bottom of the rod to the floor. If you do not want your panels to touch the floor deduct 1/4” – 1” from the length for clearance.
  • For a sill-length drapery, measure from the bottom of the rod to the sill and add 4 inches (if desired) for light blockage.
